Pressure on Catholic politicians

Dear Editor:

The Rev. Raymond Schroth, a Jesuit priest and professor of humanities at St. Peter’s College, commented upon criticism of the pro-abortion stance of Catholic politicians by many top clergy in mother church.

He states that, in addition to the abortion issue, “We have a whole list of things that politicians are responsible for…” Of course, he does not, at least in this article, take a stand against anti-abortion individuals who commit murder.

Further, the good reverend goes on to say, “One of the responsibilities (of politicians) is opposing pre-emptive war, and I don’t see anyone denying Communion to all the Republicans who voted for the war…”

This casting of aspersions upon Republicans belies the fact that the Senate vote for the Iraq war was bipartisan – 77-23. JFK (John Forbes Kerry) along with many other Democrats, cast his vote for the Iraq war. On the other hand, his fellow Senator from Massachusetts (JFK’s brother Ted Kennedy) voted no.

What is most gratuitously insulting is that the good Rev. chose political sides, rather than telling the whole truth (the sin of omission, committed by a pedagogue.)
