Dear Editor:
The Associated Humane Societies, 124 Evergreen Avenue, Newark, 973-824-7080, is encouraging New Jersey residents to share their home and their heart by adopting a homeless dog or cat. The group says the loyalty and adoration of a homeless animal can extend Valentine’s Day throughout the year.
Rescuing an unwanted animal from a pound or shelter is a pure act of kindness and affection, and you will be rewarded with years of love, devotion and companionship. They will fill your home with warmth and tenderness and may be the best present you ever give yourself. Studies show that pet owners live longer and suffer fewer stress-related illnesses than people without pets.
All animals adopted from the Associated Humane Societies are provided with up-to-date inoculations, microchipping, spay/neuter, collar, identification tag and a bag of Hill’s Science Diet. Guidelines for choosing pets are available through AHS staffers.
The Associated Humane Societies has saved hundreds of thousands of animals since operations began in Newark in 1906. It is one of the few animal shelters in New Jersey that has a full-time veterinary staff and one of a handful in the United States that provides sanctuary for all species of domestic animals, wildlife, farm animals and exotics at its renowned Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River. Two other facilities are located in Tinton Falls and Union.
All Society shelters are open seven days a week for your convenience from noon until 5:30 p.m.
