On March 28, 2005 Hoboken will celebrate the 150th birthday of incorporation as a city, and I would like all residents to participate in the planning of this once-in-a-lifetime event. The Sesquicentennial Celebration promises to be a unique opportunity for residents to join together to share ideas for this special series of events.
Already, I have formed the Mayor’s Committee on Hoboken’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, which incorporates individuals who represent every aspect of our community, including members of government, business, education, law enforcement and public safety, labor, veterans, clergy and others.
This undertaking will take a great deal of effort to accomplish, and your assistance is crucial in successfully accomplishing this task. Hoboken is a diverse community of long-time residents and newcomers of all ethnic groups and religions. It is a community rich in history with many notable American “firsts.” This past week, most residents should have received a videotape of “A Walk Through Hoboken” which was produced by Thirteen/WNET and outlines much of our community’s past and present. It is in this spirit that I would like to celebrate our Sesquicentennial.
I believe that the incredible diversity found in our mile-square city is what makes Hoboken so special and should be highlighted throughout 2005. In order to ensure that we give Hoboken the recognition she deserves next year, I believe we need to begin planning early. Please volunteer and join in planning and coordinating our celebration.
