Fraguela made the right choice on his voting for stem cell research

Dear Editor:

The New Jersey Republican Party proved two important points this week: They are completely and utterly captive of the religious right, and they will not tolerate dissent within their own ranks.

GOP Assemblyman Rafael Fraguela made the right choice earlier this week when he voted to allow stem cell research in the Garden State — making New Jersey only the second state in the nation to approve of this essential medical endeavor. The Republican Assembly Minority Leader promptly booted Fraguela from the caucus, apparently for violating party dogma.

Perhaps the New Jersey GOP should think about making themselves a “big tent” party that tolerates diverse points of view on important issues. Otherwise, they will continue to lose seats and fall further into minority status.
