Verdict in the Gavina case was a complete injustice

Dear Editor:

I would like to address the Gavina case. I think the verdict was a complete injustice! These people have no idea what they have done. The Gavinas are not sweet innocent people, and the jury’s actions will set them free. At first I was angry with the jurors (part of me still is) but my pity for them is much greater. I pity them because if one of the Gavina brothers does something like this again, it will be on their conscience.

Hearing the verdict yesterday was like getting that horrible phone call two years ago all over again. The pain is overwhelming! I have but one question for anyone who can answer me. How is it possible that this jury found the defendants to be the victims? Several people were attacked that night and one was killed. The one point I think everyone missed was that before anything other than an argument occurred, one man supposedly walked to his car, opened his trunk and armed himself with a deadly weapon. Does this sound like the actions of a peaceful man? No one was even on his property at that moment. This verdict doesn’t make sense. Although we feel we have been failed by the court system, we take solace in the fact that the good Lord in heaven knows the truth and vengeance will be his!

I ask that everyone who reads this realizes that Dom’s killer did not take just one life. He took away many lives. Betty will never again feel the warmth of her true love. She will never have his children; her dreams for their future are gone. Erik will never experience the birth of his own niece or nephew. Carol & Dominick Sr. will never get to hold their son again, let alone his children. Our family will never again hear one of his jokes or feel his touch. No, they didn’t take one life that day, they took many lives, too many to count. So for those readers who are thinking about what the Gavinas have lost, they must think again. They can see and touch and hear both men. They haven’t lost anything. They have their children, they have their husbands, and one day will have their grandchildren.
