Sept. 11 poem was trite, un-grammatically correct

Dear Editor:

Your newspaper has a penchant for printing trite and illiterate poetry. Of course, you realize that a poet should have a grasp of language and a basic knowledge of what is grammatically correct.

The poem, My Old Familiar Faces, which appeared in the Reporter September 7, incorrectly states “somebody’s niece, laying in the heaven.” “laying” should read “lying.” Any grammar school pupil would know that. The poem contains cliché after cliché, making me aware that the Reporter is not an arbiter of what constitutes good poetry.

Bravo for publishing poetry that is not even good prose!
