Don’t let your personal feelings about me get in the way of our town’s safety!

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to Mayor Elwell’s letter to the Secaucus Reporter concerning myself and the recommendations I made at the last town council meeting regarding code and safety violations at the new amphitheater in Buchmuller Park.

Mr. Elwell, I would suggest that you sit with your sub-code and building inspectors and review sections of the Boca National Building Code. The set of double doors in question are in violation of the Boca Building Code. Also, please check the barrier free section of the construction code for handicapped accessibility onto the stage.

Your statement that “negative comments by residents who do not have good intentions for our community speak for themselves” is unwarranted and slanderous. I would match my record concerning the love for our town against yours any day. As a volunteer fireman for almost 40 years, a former fire captain and chief, former fire inspector, past councilman, volunteer to drive the seniors to Yankee Stadium, and a current member of the Board of Education, my bringing to your attention code violations in our public buildings should be listened to with serious concern. Do you need a tragedy to occur to our fellow citizens before you address these problems?

Your animosity towards me is well known. The fact you, as mayor, endorsed candidates for a Board of Education election, actually being the treasurer of said campaign and against the principles and ethics of town politics, is proof enough. As you know, I received the most votes of all the candidates, the people of Secaucus having voiced their opinions concerning your methods. Your personal feelings towards me, however, should not get in the way of the safety of Secaucus and the rights of the handicapped to have full access to public places.

Please do what is right and make sure that no one gets hurt.

Sincerely,
George H. Heflich, Sr.
Board of Education Trustee
