Each year, when the leaves turn orange and the days grow increasingly shorter, Jersey City artists open their studios and display their work to the public.
The annual Artist Studio Tour, entering its 13th year, is known as one of New Jersey’s premiere opportunities for the public to actively engage with artists and will be held this year on Oct. 3-5.
Several hundred artists, whose work includes photography, pottery, oil paints, crafts, and watercolors, will take part in the weekend event throughout a number of locations in the downtown area. There are many new galleries, several of which have just opened this year.
For the first time, the free self-guided tour has expanded beyond visual arts to include many genres of creativity, including music, dance, performance, video exhibitions, and a fashion show.
The Jersey City Museum on Montgomery Street will open its doors to the public free of charge, giving residents a chance to absorb one of the city’s unique treasures.
"Jersey City has long been home to a flourishing arts community which continues to grow," said Mayor Glenn Cunningham. "We are fortunate to have such a diverse city whose unique characteristics are expressed through the arts. I encourage everyone to attend the tour."
A few of the highlights this year are: A block party on Oct. 4 on Grove Street and Jersey and Newark avenues; several group shows at 111 First St.; a video festival at the Hyatt Regency at Exchange Place on Oct. 5; "Art in the Park" at Van Vorst Park during the weekend; and a fashion show on Oct. 4 at 302 Sixth St. at 8 p.m.
