Too much of the park is reserved for fishermen

Dear Editor:

Last week=s article about Pier C Park mentions plans for a 700 foot fishing pier, approximately the same length as the entire Pier A Park. One has to wonder why so much space and expense are being dedicated to such a specialized use. As it is, fishermen have already commandeered a good part of Pier A, and to this writer represent an unwelcome presence there. They=re not particularly clean, they play radios out loud, their casting can be dangerous to passers-by, and maybe most important, they prevent other people from having access to the railings where they park themselves for hours at a time. One also gets the impression that a lot, if not most of them, aren=t even from Hoboken. If the additional pier is built, will they then be restricted from Pier A or will they simply be allowed to spread out as they wish?

Whey are we going to so much trouble to cater to this group? If anything, we should be restricting their access to our beautiful and precious waterfront parks, not expanding it.
