The better the schools, the better the community!

Dear Editor:

The new Superintendent of Schools in Union City was a great choice. I would like to begin by congratulating Stanley Sanger on his promotion, and I wish him the best of luck. I feel fortunate to have been chosen, along with my colleague Carlos Vallejo, to be on the “search and interview committee” by our fellow board members. I would like to personally thank Board President Lina Del Nodal for her leadership style and for having confidence in us to select the candidate to recommend to the Board of Education. I would also like to thank Cathie Sousa, our representative from the New Jersey School Boards Association, for her assistance and for her presence at all of the interviews. After three and a half months of advertising, searching and later interviewing prospective candidates, I know we made the best decision.

I am a firm believer in promoting from within, and Mr. Sanger is a great example of someone who really knows the system. Sandy was born and raised in Union City. He attended Gilmore Elementary School and Emerson High School. He has served our district for 29 years, and for the past three years, he has demonstrated his leadership abilities in his position as Assistant Superintendent of Schools, where he oversaw the Early Childhood Department.

Mr. Sanger made a home for himself in our district by creating the Early Childhood Department, which although is only in its fourth year, is already considered a model district. Mr. Sanger has always put children first, and if we are to keep Union City First, we must start with our children. I know that in years that lie ahead, thanks to his hard work, dedication, persistence and vision, we will reap the benefits with higher scores, better schools and in turn, a better community. My best to Mr. Sanger and the Union City Board of Education.

Sincerely,
Lenny Calvo
Vice President, Union City Board of Education
