Running for office has been one of the best experiences of my life

Dear Editor:

Although I would have liked a different outcome, the past several months have provided me with one of the best experiences in my life — the privilege to run for public office. I view it as a privilege because I live in a country where citizens can actively participate on the political stage. But like any privilege you must work to make it worthwhile. The months of campaigning by standing in front of you, the voters, and knocking on your doors to hear what impacts your lives is something I would not trade for the world. I could not have met more people, heard more views and learned more about myself any other way.

I wish to thank those who believed in our message that the City of Hoboken must become accountable, not just to those in power and the money-brokers, but to the people who live and work here, especially those who are unable to speak for themselves. I wish to thank my running mates for the energy and dedication that brought us from a standing start to getting almost 40 percent of the vote. I am extremely grateful for the numerous volunteers who contributed their time, money and enthusiasm to an ideal of individual empowerment and personal responsibility — something that is too often missing from our culture. Special thanks to my family who came from across the country, more than once, in support of me. To my husband Ricky, and my two wonderful children, thank you for being the staff by which I stood that gave me the strength to laugh at stories that were flights of fancy and to let me know that I was doing something worthwhile.

I would also like to formally wish Councilman Richard DelBoccio the best in his next term. I am eager and ready to work with you and the new Council to open our government to all the people of our city.

The movement to bring accountability to our town continues to be driven by residents interested in good government. That momentum can continue to build by others becoming aware of local issues and being an informed electorate.

With sincere appreciation,
Elizabeth Mason
