A big dog is a big responsibility

Dear Editor:

The Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League’s local NJ Chapter has been bombarded in the last few weeks with about 20 owners turning in their dogs to rescue. The reasons have been many; from “the dog grew too big” to “I can’t afford to pay for food and vet bills” to “I’m moving, and I don’t want the dog anymore.”

Owning a real-life “Scooby Doo” is a giant responsibility when it comes to understanding obedience training, vet and food bills, but with education in advance of owning one, it can be a rewarding experience for the right family. These 100 to 200 pound “Velcro dogs” are extremely lovable and do not require large homes to live in as is often thought.

Our non-profit organization is in dire need of qualified people to foster and adopt these dogs. Certain requirements apply, such as a fenced yard and indoor-carpeted steps so the dog doesn’t slide down wooden steps. Volunteers are needed, as are monetary donations.
