Central Avenue garbage issue

Dear Editor:

The Central Avenue SID is the first and oldest Special Improvement District organization in Jersey City. The intent of this organization is to improve and revitalize one of Jersey City’s oldest Shopping Districts, that being Central Avenue. Funds come from the five hundred Central Avenue SID members which pay an assessment tax that is then matched 1:1 by the City of Jersey City. Recently, the Central Avenue SID had purchased unique and beautiful new holiday lights for $32,000 sharing the holiday spirit with the entire city.

In addition to promoting the area, the Central Avenue SID tries to keep Central Avenue clean and beautiful. Three sanitation workers are employed to sweep and maintenance the street seven hours a day, seven days a week. Although these sanitation workers are constantly roaming the area looking for garbage and changing public garbage receptacles, these efforts are not enough to make Central Avenue inviting to outsiders.

One of the bigger problems in the area is due to local residence piling garbage bags by receptacles. With the Special Improvement District limited on resources to end this dilemma, outside help was sought.’

A meeting was arranged with the Jersey City Incinerator Authority (JCIA) and Neighborhood Improvement District (NID) to work together to resolve this reoccurring problem. Although also short on manpower, the JCIA provided one extra SID garbage pick-up per day. Mayor Glen D. Cunningham’s new Second Change Program has provided the JCIA with the necessary man power to accomplish this task.

As Central Avenue SID’s President, along with the Board of Directors and Executive Director, we would like to give a special “Thank You” to Mayor Glen D. Cunningham, Jersey City Incinerator Authority’s own Chief Executive Director, Oren K. Dabney, Environmental Inspector J. Ferris, NID’s Operation Manager Wayne Anderson, and Second Chance Program’s Mathis Sharplen, Fred Marshall, and Alex McBride for their cooperation and prompt response to accommodate Central Avenue’s garbage overflow. The leadership and dedication skill demonstrated by thee gentlemen is greatly appreciated and needed to keep our community strong. Please continue with the great work seeing as that support can keep Central Avenue clean, beautiful and clear of piled garbage bags.

Michael Yun, President
Central Avenue S.I.D.
