While Hudson Reporter Athlete of the Week Betty Mendieta was busy getting her 1,000th career point last week for North Bergen, she wasn’t the only Hudson County product to reach the prestigious plateau last week.
Hudson County Prep’s standout Marisa Carey became the first girl basketball player in the school’s history to score her 1,000th point last week. Carey, who is averaging nearly 22 points per game, has guided her team to an undefeated record thus far (10-0) and first place in the HCIAA Seglio Division race…
Get-well wishes go out to St. Dominic Academy girls’ basketball coach Mike Delaney, who has been knocked out of commission for a few games after being hospitalized last week. Delaney will be replaced on the sidelines by dutiful assistant Chris Ambrose, but the team is anxiously awaiting Delaney’s return…
Hoboken’s standout running back Ira Guilford is still debating over his college choice, after having made official recruiting visits to Penn State, Ohio State, Syracuse and Notre Dame, with his final trip to Rutgers planned for this weekend.
While it was believed all along that national champion Ohio State was always the frontrunner, because of Guilford’s strong family base in that state (his grandfather was a standout college football player in Ohio during his heyday), Guilford was also very impressed when he took his official visit to Notre Dame, like most high school athletes are when they see the aura of the Golden Dome and "Touchdown Jesus."
Guilford will sign a letter of intent, one way or another, next Wednesday, Feb. 5 – the same day that St. Peter’s Prep quarterback Joe Dailey will sign with Nebraska and Union Hill’s Pedro Sosa will sign with Rutgers…
The Ferris girls’ basketball team has been bolstered by the return of senior guard Denaya Hemingway, who had to miss most of the season with a serious leg injury. Hemingway, one of the best all-around performers in the county, returned last week and scored 13 points in her first game against Memorial…
It’s safe to say that St. Peter’s Prep bowler Martin Gurczeski loves the Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick. Gurczeski rolled a 749 series and a high game of 269 while winning the Central Jersey Winter Bowling Classic last weekend.
Gurczeski, whose average is 193 per game, also rolled a 235 game and a 245 game that day…
It’s a month before the opening of spring training and Jersey City’s John Valentin is still a player without a team. The former St. Anthony and Seton Hall standout, who spent all of the 2002 season with the Mets, was not offered another contract with the team and has yet to secure employment for the upcoming season….
Although the St. Peter’s College women’s basketball team is perhaps the smallest in veteran coach Mike Granelli’s career, they still have managed to turn their season around and own an 8-8 record and a 4-2 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Seniors Anna Barthold and Kim McDonough have been playing very well lately, giving the Peahens a shot to contend in the MAAC, when it was believed they would flat out struggle this year…
