Does President Bush represent our and the world’s best interests?

Dear Editor:

For those who support the inevitable attack on Iraq, I welcome their opinion with the suggestion that they should be the first to enlist in this foolish war.

It should come as no surprise that our president has been dominating the front page every day for the past month. He needs to distract from the sluggish economy and the mounting corporate scandals that refuse to go away (remember Enron, Harken & Halliburton?) A war with Iraq will do more than distract from our economy, it will bankrupt it.

It’s interesting to note that the Bush Administration has turned up the heat on Iraq while the hearings on the intelligence failures of September 11, perhaps the most relevant issue for civilians to date, had been simultaneously drowned out. Our president assumes that a war in a troubled region will be quick and clean, irresponsibly ignoring the suffering that this will impose on ordinary Americans and Iraqis alike.

I ask you, does the current president represent our (and the world’s) best interests? I urge you to call your senators and representatives: Senator Jon Corzine, 973-645-3030; Senator Robert Torricelli, 973-624-5555; Representative Robert Menendez, 201-222-2828.

Voice your concerns. Talk to friends and neighbors. Write to your local papers. Perhaps this will provide the last chance at democratic self-expression. The media’s sudden silence on the issue of inspections and restraint seems especially disturbing.
