A new venue Love Sexy moves to Secaucus

Love Sexy, the small nightclub famous for indie music and a successful underground DJ scene, moved to Secaucus late in June.

According to owner John Vargas, after almost a decade in Hoboken, it was time to move. After working out an agreement with the operators of the nightclub AJ’s on Secaucus Road, Vargas will move into the venue next to AJ’s, formerly known as the Blue Room.

“Secaucus does not have much of a scene. We are going start a scene,” Vargas said, noting that he sees Secaucus as ripe for a cultural development.

Love Sexy will try to accomplish what the Blue Room jazz club failed to do at the same site, drawing in crowds from around the area to the location on Secaucus Road near Henry Street.

“We’re going to try to bring in bigger acts than we did in Hoboken, national acts,” Vargas said. “We’d also have plans to run a gallery within the place and we’re looking for painters, photographers and sculptors to incorporate different aspects of the arts.”

During the weekends, the club’s house DJ will be DJ Tico the funky junky superstar. Tico has been collaborating with Vargas at Sexy for more than a year.

Vargas said he is excited about the move. He is confident he can add a vital ingredient to the nightlife in Secaucus. Only five minutes away from Hoboken, he expects Hudsonites to take the ride to newest club in the county.

“Overall, cut and dry, Secaucus is a better situation. We were limited back in our old place,” he said.

Vargas believes that he will draw the same crowd that he had in the Hoboken location, with ages ranging from 21 to 29. He also figures to draw in a strong Latin contingent from throughout Hudson County.

Love Sexy, he hopes will continue to be at the forefront of innovative music, providing a warm and welcoming venue for artists in all genres of music.

Love Sexy dates back to 1991. It was not always at its present location. It all began at a club on First and Washington streets in Hoboken. Back then, Love Sexy was one of the first underground dance parties, featuring the best in underground house and disco classics. After a couple of years, Vargas moved to 104 Hudson St. in Hoboken. There he brought in almost every kind of act.

Love Sexy’s new home is on 201 Secaucus Rd. There is free parking. The new facility offers a large bar, more than a dozen tables, a stage, and it also has an outdoor space ideal for dance parties. In all, the venue has a capacity of almost 400 people. The venue is open until 2 a.m. on weeknights and 3 a.m. on the weekends.

“Please have your party with us for the best time at the best prices ever,” Vargas said.
