Keeping Hoboken quiet and safe

Dear Editor:

Mayor Roberts’ announcement that Hoboken’s police force will ticket motorcyclists whose motorcycles exceed legal noise levels is welcome news for those of us who like to sleep through the night and enjoy neighborly conversations on the street without the interrupting roar of motorcycle engines and the shriek of car alarms that invariably come to life in their wake.

Police Chief LaBruno now faces the task of ensuring that his subordinates enforce the law vigorously, whatever personal affinity for loud bikes that his officers may or may not have when they are not on duty to serve the public.

Let’s work to make sure that this new policy succeeds as well as another positive quality-of-life change that Mayor Roberts initiated last summer. The “Yield to Pedestrians” signs that the Roberts Administration has installed in numerous crosswalks have made crossing busy streets a much safer experience.

All of us in Hoboken deserve safe, quiet streets. It looks like we may be getting them.
