Making their own music JC’s Drywater wins audiences with unique sounds

Drywater, a New York City-based edgy pop trio, is one of those groups that is about to break through the mainstream soon.

“I’ve got something to say…we’ve all got something to say," is the band’s motto, which is a lyric from the song "Preacher" off their self-titled album released last year. If you haven’t heard from them yet, you will eventually.

Drywater is a hard-edged rock band made up of members James Salerno (lead vocals and guitars), Carter Hoodless (drums) and Gerry Beyer (bass).

Hoodless lives in Jersey City, while the other bandmates reside in the area. They have been together for over three years. They released their first album last year, which includes tracks like "wonderful world," and "rotter." The songs are excellent tunes evident of the band’s talent.

Their influences include The Beatles along with many of today’s hit rock bands.

"I love all types of music," said Hoodless, during a recent interview.

Their music is a perfect blend of rock and punk. To the band, this is their ideal job.

"It will be great to quit any day job," Salerno said. "We play for the love of the music."

Salerno has been writing songs since he was a young kid. But the band mainly writes in the studio as a group through a jam session, to which they later add vocals.

Drywater has opened for bands like The Damned, Bouncing Souls, Groovie Ghoulies, and Blank77. They have played many shows in the area, including Love Sexy and Maxwell’s in Hoboken, and Tramps, CBGB’s, and The Continental in New York City. Drywater is planning an East Coast summer tour to promote the album.

The guys like to have fun with their music, according to Hoodless. They have great stage presence with energetic sets. Sometimes they will even throw in a punk version of a Beatles song.

"It’s not about gimmicks," said Salerno. "We play straight forward rock music."

You might have heard some Drywater music and not even know it. The instrumental version of the song "token" has been featured on national television networks for the new Mercedes station wagon commercial.

Drywater is recently in the studio releasing demos for their follow up album.

"We are just your average hard working rock band," Hoodless said.

This year the band is planning a college tour along with heavy radio promotion. For more information on the band visit their web site at www.drywatermusic.com. They should be returning for a Hudson County date this year, according to Salerno. q
