Moving on but not forgetting

Monday’s graduation from Hoboken High School was both an end and a beginning for 144 seniors. As students walked up to the stage to receive their diplomas, proud parents in formal attire snapped pictures and beamed with unabashed satisfaction.

In their farewell addresses, valedictorian Helen Yao and salutatorian Naresh Patel cherished the wide breadth of experience and friends that they will miss, but seemed to approach the future with a dizzying sense of excitement. “It’s time to open the doors and let the future begin,” said Patel. In his speech, the graduate, who will be attending Rutgers University, thanked his teachers for supporting him and teaching him for four years.

“I want to thank all the teachers from Hoboken High School for giving me the skills that I need to succeed in life,” Patel said. During his time at the high school, Patel was a member of the Emergency Response Team, as well as the Model United Nations, Mock Trail Club and Science and Environmental Club.

He also acknowledged all of the hard work of his dedicated parents. “I doubt that any of us would be here today without the support of our parents and family members,” he said.

On hand to give the keynote address was Hoboken mayor and Hoboken High School graduate David Roberts. “I can’t help but notice the fantastic class of 2002,” said Roberts. “You’re about to embark on a new chapter in your life. In whatever you do remember that good character is the most important thing, because today’s world is a much different place and today’s graduates are have much more responsibilities [than when I graduated].”

The mayor added that the outgoing seniors should look toward the future but relish the moment. “Savor today, because this is your time,” said Roberts.

Board of Education President John R. Raslowsky also addressed the graduates with a few words of encouragement.

“My education in public schools gave me a fabulous foundation for life,” he said. “The lessons that you received this year are going to serve you well.”

For the first time in the school’s history, the graduation ceremony was held on the campus of the Stevens Institute of Technology at the Canavan Arena.
