An enchanted summer Concerts, movies, Shakespeare in the park in Hoboken

Movies under the stars, art in the park, Shakespearean plays, a Puerto Rican Parade and a whole lot of concerts are among the things Hoboken has to offer to all its residents and their friends.

The "Movies Under the Stars" series will feature a dozen flicks. On June 5, "A Beautiful Mind" will be shown, and on June 12, "Bridget Jones’ Diary" will be featured. All the showtimes are at 9 p.m. and the movies will be screened at Pier A park on First Street and Sinatra Drive. Admission is free. People are encouraged to bring a blanket or a lawn chair, according to the city’s cultural affairs director, Geri Fallo.

"This summer we are offering only the best in entertainment for the entire family," Fallo said. "Our movies are great, and we have top-notch acts."

On June 4, the Memory Makers swing band will perform at Sinatra Park on Fourth Street and Sinatra Drive, as part of the city’s concert series. All the shows are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Future lineups include Hoboken’s own singer/songwriter, Mary Ann Farley (July 16), renowned national singer Freedy Johnston (July 25), ska band Skanatra (Aug. 29), singer/songwriter Scott E. Moore (Aug. 27), and the Demolition String Band (June 27).

Another summer event is the Puerto Rican Parade Committee Carnival, which will be held from July 12 to July 14 at Sinatra Park from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the event will feature rides, games, food, and music. Also, Shakespeare in the Park, presented by the Hudson Shakespeare Company, will showcase "The Merchant of Venice" June 14, 21, and 28; and "King Lear," on July 12, 19, and 26. The plays begin at 7 p.m. The first play in a series is held at Pier A Park, the second one at Shipyard Park, and the last one at Sinatra Park.

"By alternating the location of the plays, we target different communities in town," Fallo said.

Art in the Park

There is also the "Art in the Park," program designed for children up to eight years old. Starting June 3, every Monday in Pier A Park and Thursday at Elysian Park from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., children are taught how to paint, draw, and work with colors.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to art," Fallo said.

Children must be accompanied by a guardian, and dress accordingly. In case of rain, classes will be held at Echo of Art on First Street.
