Let’s have a public debate in Weehawken

Dear Editor:

This is a formal public request for a debate between candidates for the May 14th Weehawken Town Council election. For several weeks now, as campaign manager for the Weehawken Initiative Now candidates, I have made written and telephone requests for an open public debate to Ed Keating, campaign manager for the incumbent Weehawken and You candidates. So far they have not agreed to participate.

This is an insult to all Weehawken voters who deserve to hear the candidates for themselves in an open public forum. Newspaper interviews behind closed doors are no substitute for an open debate with audience participation.

We’ve asked the League of Women Voters to moderate, but they won’t participate until both sides agree to a debate. The WIN candidates are eager to debate the incumbents anywhere in town where there’s room for a public audience, and any day and time that most voters are home from work and able to attend.

Come on incumbents, there is still a week left. Why are you hiding? Stop the excuses. This is the first time in twelve years that Weehawken voters have had a choice. You have no right to take it away from them. If you can’t even get this done, how can we expect you to accomplish anything with yet another four years.
