Dogs, don’t drop your dog droppings here

Dear Editor:

The problem of dog droppings on our city’s streets has become one of increased concern, not only to the Board of Commissioners and me but to all of our residents.

One of the most frequent complaints my office receives from residents is about dog droppings. This is not only unsightly but unsanitary, and “it is against the law.” City ordinance prohibits residents from letting their animals dirty the sidewalks without cleaning up after the animals.

The purpose of this letter is to ask dog owners to please comply with the law and clean up after their dogs. Dog owners found in violation of this law will be summonsed by undercover police officers and inspectors and will face fines imposed by the municipal court judge.

In this connection, I also ask that owners of other small animals such as cats do not dump litter boxes on the sidewalk. Please dispose of the litter by putting it in with your garbage in a securely tied plastic bag.

Please help us keep Union City clean.

Thank you very much for your cooperation.
