The issue of animal care and adoption has become one of the consistent policy issues of 2002 all across New Jersey.
How we decide to address these issues says a lot about how we will work together on overall environmental issues.
I want to commend the Secaucus Town Council, Secaucus Department of Public Works Superintendent Mike Gonnelli and Animal Control Officer Al McClure for creating a partnership with PSE&G to help improve the quality of life for the “guests” at the Secaucus Animal Shelter, recently dedicated as the Al McClure Animal Shelter.
Through their partnership, PSE&G volunteers have built: a “cattery” and increased the square footage of the cat room with the construction of walk-bridges, window ledges and hiding places; exercise ramps and play structures in the dog run; a soft-release cage for injured, sick and orphaned animals that resulted in the successful release of two native adolescent raccoons earlier this year, and rehabilitation cages to help nurse the animals back to health. There are plenty of corporations, trade professionals, general contractors, and others who want to apply their skills beyond the job site, and who want to help improve these facilities.
Just ask, and start the dialogue where everyone agrees, “Animal care must improve.”
The more people get involved with this issue, the more animals will be adopted-and the less that will have to be adopted.
