Taking my son to Maxwell’s was the ‘best birthday present I ever had’

Dear Editor:

I recently made a visit to Maxwell’s on the occasion of my 40th birthday. Our group of seven, including my eight-year-old son, arrived at 9 p.m. I have to admit I had some misgivings as to how we would be received at such a late hour with a child in tow. All of my doubts were quickly laid to rest the moment we entered. Our party was quickly seated and when the menus arrived they included a special children’s menu. The service was attentive and cheerful especially noted the friendly way my son was treated by our waitress and the entire Maxwell’s staff. As a treat for my son I took him into the back room to see and hear a live band play. When we entered it was a standing room only audience. My son was unable to see but as members of the audience noticed him they kindly let us pass to the stage. I knelt down next to my son and held his hand looking at his smiling, awe struck face as he watched his first live band. It was the best birthday present I could have received.

Since the events of September 11th I have resolved to spend more time with my family and especially my son. If this means going to a ball game or a nightclub so be it. At Maxwell’s we did not experience the rowdiness or bad behavior so often described in recent letters to the Hoboken Reporter. The clubs and restaurants in Hoboken were and are an integral part of what led to the town’s revival. There is now a concerted effort to cast these estabishments in a negative light. For my part I saw nothing that would lead me to the same conclusion. I just had a wonderful time with friends and family at a great restaurant.
