Let’s see what happens now

Dear Editor:

On January 1, 2000 in his swearing in ceremony, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell drew some of the county’s political elite.

On January 1, 2000 when Mayor Elwell was sworn into office, who did we find standing right beside him, none other than the "powerhouse" (as Elwell liked to call him) County Executive Robert Janiszewski. Elwell made a big deal out of his being in attendance.

On that day there was a pledge of "county cooperation" between Elwell and Janiszewski. I remember the words of the then county executive when speaking about the new mayor. He said, "This group of people will be the architects of the 21st Century. This is no small undertaking. The next months and years will determine much of what happens over the next century. This action will define the quality of life in Secaucus."

On January 1, 2002 Elwell will be sworn in as he was two years ago. However, the "powerhouse" County Executive Robert Janiszewski will not be at his side. Rumor has it Janiszewski has other "speaking engagements" planned. What a difference two years makes.

I wonder which political "powerhouse" Mayor Elwell will call upon to praise him with words of wisdom and the architectural plans the county has for the future of Secaucus.
