Dear Editor:
I wholeheartedly endorse and encourage other voters to consider Jim McGreevey for the next Governor of New Jersey.
The choice is clear. Mr. McGreevey is a pragmatist. He is clearly an advocate of gun control; his program to start paying off state debt which will be funded partly by denying property tax refunds to households whose annual earnings are more than $200,000 indicates insight and concern to the average and below average wage earners; his sensible reforms for education, such as hiring tutors for young students who are having difficult in learning, and to provide funding for privately built health clinics in urban schools is a godsend to Jersey City and other urban areas; his open space policy to areas of the state where open space is sparse is sincere and critically needed.
On the other side of the coin is Bret Schundler, a charlatan, who offers "pie in the sky" promises to New Jerseyans. Bret is an egotistical, impractical elitist who is out-of-sync with the mainstream citizenry, and has shifted positions based upon the audience he is addressing. His non-toll Garden State Parkway, another "pie in the sky" campaign gimmick sounds quite appealing; however, Bret fails to mention that NJ taxpayers would be required to dish out the millions to replace the maintenance, if the tolls on the 173 mile highway are eliminated.
In a letter addressed to Jersey City residents (November 24, 1999) former Republican Governor Christine Whitman stated, "In its four-month review, the state Distressed Cities team has uncovered numerous instances of wasteful and inefficient spending in Jersey City’s budget. I can assure you there is no need for the type of draconian actions being threatened by Mayor Schundler."
