Dear Editor:
I say the Serenity Prayer before every class that I teach. It’s a simple prayer — so difficult to live by, but so meaningful, especially now. "God, grant all Americans the serenity to accept the things they cannot change, courage to change the things they can and the wisdom to know the difference."
September 11th cannot be changed. But our leaders must have the courage to do what must be done to bring justice to the victims and their families whose lives are forever changed. Firemen and all other rescue workers were amazing profiles in courage.
Ordinary citizens must now show their courage by not living in fear; go to the ball games, visit the museums, spend money, buy stock and yes, get on a plane.
People from all over have shown how helpful, generous and patriotic they are. But we must be stronger and more courageous than ever before. I was not there that day, and some may say it’s much easier said than done. But with a courageous spirit we can rise from the ashes and be better people and a better nation.
All of us are forever changed, but I pray we will be forever together in the fight against fear and terror.
In God and ourselves we must trust.
