County animal shelter plans fair

Dear Editor:

Imagine saving 800 lives and improving the existence of countless others in your community. The Assisi Center at the Hudson County Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has done exactly that. In the culmination of a year’s worth of effort, the revitalized "no-kill" shelter or "life center" is celebrating this success with its first annual fabulous street fair.

The community event will be held on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7 in the lot adjacent to the Center at Johnston Avenue and Grand Street, Jersey City. A first annual pet show will be the highlight of the fair in addition to pet training, a healthy pet information kiosk and lots of food, face painting and all-around excitement.

With the momentum it has gained, The Assisi Center has still greater goals for the future. To add to the current energetic adoption and education programs, a planned "Spay Mobile" would travel through the neighborhood and provide spaying services. It would play an educational role as well. The mobile would cost approximately $100,000 per year to operate.

At the same time, the private, non-profit organization provides its services to the public with little financial assistance from local government. The Assisi Center relies on funding from other sources in order to continue its aid to the health and well being of all its community members. The Center’s October street fair will give Hudson County residents an opportunity to celebrate and support the efforts of their neighborhood "life" center.

Vendors, volunteers and fun-seekers are invited to contact the Center for more information on how they can help with the first annual fabulous street fair and/or other projects.
