Hoboken Shipyard reunion set for July 29

Dear Editor:

Since inaugurating our new home in April, the Hoboken Historical Museum has been celebrating Hoboken’s unique contribution to the shipbuilding industry with its exhibit “A History of This Place: The Hoboken Shipyard, 1890 to the Present.” This celebration will culminate on Sunday, July 29 at 3 p.m. with the premiere of Lisa Sartori’s documentary “A Shipyard in Hoboken,” a look at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard through historic photographs, archival film footage and the recollections of some of the men and women who worked there. Some of the former workers featured in the documentary include Lucille Haack, one of the first women to work at the Shipyard; Benedict J. Fernandez, who started as a crane operater and went on to become a well-known photographer and the recently deceased Charles Kosbab, who had worked at the Shipyard for over 50 years.

The Museum thought this event would be a perfect time for a reunion of people who worked in the Shipyard at any time before its closing in 1982. If you worked there, or know anyone who did, we hope that you will attend this exciting event and share your memories of that time, including any photos or memorabilia you may have. The Museum is located at 1301 Hudson Street, and we are open Monday through Thursday 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. For more information please call 656-2240.
