Million Mom March declares opposition to Schundler gun plank

Dear Editor:

The Million Mom March today declared its unyielding opposition to any change in New Jersey law that would permit the carrying of concealed handguns, calling the pro-concealment position supported by Republican candidate for governor Bret Schundler “totally irresponsible and extreme.”

A statement issued on behalf of the New Jersey Million Mom March organization said: “The Million Mom March is working tirelessly for saner, safer gun laws at the state and federal level. There is nothing in the entire debate about gun safety so totally irresponsible and extreme as to advocate that anyone and everyone be permitted to carry a concealed weapon.

“Mothers and fathers across our great state will be appalled to learn that someone running for governor would allow concealed weapons to be carried everywhere in New Jersey, including into our schools, onto children’s playing fields, or even into houses of worship. We intend to let them know that candidate Schundler is an advocate for carrying concealed guns.”

The Million Mom March statement added, “Candidate Schundler claims special interests have no claim on him. The Nation Rifle Association is in his camp and delivered his nomination for governor. He is beholden to the NRA as no other candidate for governor of New Jersey has ever been. The NRA is one of the most powerful special interests in the United States. It has stamped a clear claim on the Schundler candidacy.

“New Jersey will not stand for this as they have in Texas. In the months ahead the Million Mom March will work tirelessly to inform New Jerseyans about Schundler’s extreme gun advocacy. His position is a danger to the entire public, children and adults alike.”
