Dear Editor:
At a recent city council meeting, council members debated over the appointment of Michael Russo as second alternate to the Zoning Board of Adjustment. The appointment came before the city council in the form of a communication and not a request.
That’s because under current law, Mayor Russo had absolute power of appointment, with no advice or consent from council members.
When the law (R-20) was passed, a few years ago, I argued vehemently against it.
Such appointments should be subject to approval from the legislative body.
Under the new administration, R-20 should be repealed and rewritten to reflect these changes and return checks and balances to city government.
