Could humans become a species of the past?

Dear Editor:

Dinosaurs, gone, many animals and plant species, also gone, humans, nearly gone? It could be possible that the cycle will repeat itself. Unless we act quickly to prevent it, it is definitely possible.

Our environment is dying and we could go with it. Alaska is our biggest state, but for how long? Due to the fact that Alaska’s glaciers are melting, there is a large possibility that parts of Alaska might end up under water. Our temperatures have risen an average of 7 degrees F. To many people that’s not a lot. But 7 degrees F was enough to force the Pacific Salmon population to drop in 1997-1998, coral reefs to suffer a loss of algae, called bleaching. These results don’t mean much now, but when our environment is destroyed, who will be blamed? These are warnings that should be taken seriously.

Recently, many nations have united in an attempt to help the environment. The treaty intended to protect earth is known as the Kyoto Protocol. I call it the broken promise. Our President Bush refused to follow through with the treaty formerly signed by President Clinton. Instead, he is making a $2.3 billion cut on global warming research. We contribute 25% of the earth’s CO2, but can’t afford to fix, or at least attempt to fix, this problem.

We consider ourselves the human race to be the smartest, but maybe also the deadliest.
