Eat, drink and be merry Hoboken Art and Music is here

The Hoboken Art and Music Festival will take place on Sunday, May 6 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. As always, Washington Street, between Seventh and Newark streets, will be transformed into a marketplace for over 300 artists, photographers and craftspeople, with three outdoor performance stages and more than 30 international food vendors.

Two stages will be set up at either end of the festival featuring music ranging from bluegrass to country to swing to jazz, to classic to rock ‘n’ roll. This year the lineup includes, among others: the world’s greatest bar band, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes (see p. 5); Woodstock legend Richie Havens; the alternative country sweetheart Laura Cantrell; the Don Carter Jazz Trio; the Caribbean reggae sounds of Verdict; local rockers Seeking Homer; Klezmer pop by Raving Noah; Jersey City pianist David Stellmach; the popular brother and sister team Manny and Joy Medina; and Tex-Mex-abilly music by Hoboken’s favorite plumber, Gene D. Plumber. The Hudson Shakespeare Company will also be performing.

The third stage, located on Washington and Third streets, will feature clown, magic acts and musical entertainment catered to children all day long.

Last spring’s Art & Music Festival lured an estimated 100,000 attendees to Hoboken.

“This year’s festival is going to be better than ever,” said Geri Fallo, Hoboken’s director of cultural affairs. “I know I always say that, but the really cool thing is that we have a lot more artists this year. That has been my goal since I started. I’m also excited that we got Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. And I keep hearing a rumor that Little Steven [Van Zandt] may show up. Who knows if he will, but it would be cool if he did.” The festival is sponsored locally by, among others, The Hudson Reporter Newspapers, The Hudson Athletic Club, The Systems Group and the Trust Company Bank of NJ.

The raindate is May 20. For more information call 420-2207.
