Counting down Mayoral candidate profiles, Part II

As the shockwave of Acting Governor Donald DiFrancesco’s exit from the governor’s race reverberated throughout the state, the campaign for mayor of this city continued to hum along.

With only nine days left before voters cast ballots, candidates have ratcheted up their efforts. They and their supporters have been knocking on doors, working the phones and nailing signs up around the city.

In all, six candidates will be seeking the mayor’s office in Jersey City.

Last week, the Reporter profiled former Freeholder Louis Manzo, current Council President Tom DeGise and Councilman Robert Cavanaugh. This week, the featured candidates will include former Council President and U.S. Marshal Glenn Cunningham, Department of Public Works Director Kevin Sluka and former Mayor Gerald McCann, who probably won’t end up on the ballot. McCann’s slim hopes dwindle as time rolls by. The Supreme Court reaffirmed last week a decision that the former mayor could never again hold office. Still, McCann is attempting a run for state senator.

Included in the profiles will be sidebar bios of council candidates who will be running on the tickets of the mayoral candidates.

The election will be held Tuesday, May 8.

Next week, we will profile the independent council candidates who are not running with a slate.
