One day a year, all that is asked

Dear Editor:

I would like to address the short-sighted letter submitted by Dr. David Musarra, DDS the paper concerning the Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Now I will be the first to admit that it is certainly not Hoboken’s finest hour. I tend bar at a local Irish pub, and I know first-hand just how difficult the relentless crowds can be. But, as I told myself before going into work (for my third consecutive year working the event), it’s just one day. On this one day, the “narrow band within the community” that profits from this event is not as narrow as the good doctor might think.

Obviously, the bars do fairly well (aside from any interference by the authorities). Personally, I covered my month’s rent in that one afternoon of arduous labor. But think about what happens beyond the bars–those horrible dens of iniquity that are supposedly hurting this town.

Take a look att McDonald’s receipts for the day. Take a look at Dunkin’ Donuts register. Take a look at the numerous pizzerias, delis, kiosks and bodegas and tell me, don’t profit. Take a look at the good ol’ Port Authority Trans Hudson-the medium by which the majority of these ne’er-do-wells invade our little Mile Square.

Perhaps the majority of the blame should rest with the PATH since without it none of these sinister economy-boosters would be able to get into Hoboken. Basically, Dr. Musarra, I do agree that it’s messy. But to solely place the blame on the bar industry is ignorant and naive. The town, on the whole, profits from this event. I can only imagine what the city itself generated in revenue through fines and violations. So I ask that you take all this into consideration when condemning this one-day event. As messy as it may be, it’s a moneymaker for many. By banning the “Puke-fest” you are taking a lot of money away from hard-working people. And trying to take away money can be a lot like pulling teeth. Isn’t that right, Dr. Musarra?
