An open letter to the residents of Hoboken:
My name is Terry Cappiello LaBruno. I have been a resident of Hoboken all of my 43 years of life. I’ve been blessed with three beautiful daughters and a supportive and caring husband who serves this city as a Battalion Fire Chief. I have been actively involved in local politics since my teenage years. I have always admired my uncle for his service to this city where he spent 24 years as councilman and mayor.
I believe in service. As Martin Luther King eloquently said, “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.” I have been teaching mathematics for the last 22 years in two local Catholic schools, Sacred Heart, Hoboken, and St. Mary’s, JC. I served as the athletic director and basketball coach at Sacred Heart and I am presently coaching basketball at St. Mary High School in Jersey City. I served as Commissioner for The Hoboken Housing Authority from 1995-1997.
Although most people that know and care about me constantly question my desire to run for local office, the drive won’t die. So, today, I will like to announce my desire to run for the position of Council-at-Large in the upcoming May elections in Hoboken.
Many of my friends and relatives think politics is a dirty game for dishonest people. I certainly feel differently having run for the same office in 1988 and 1993. I will run in May if I believe I have the support of a cross section of residents throughout the city, if I believe I can delicately balance the responsibility of being a mother, wife, teacher, coach and candidate, and if I believe I can make a difference sitting on the city council.
So I am reaching out to those of you who know me and those of you who would like to get to know me, to ask for your support. I can be reached at (901-3421 pager) and on line at TCLMATH@aol.com. I would appreciate it if you sign a petition in support of my candidacy or just call to ask a question on a position I have in regard to issues that you care about.
It’s silly to say that I love Hoboken, but I’ll say it anyway. Old Hoboken has changed — in some good ways and in some not so good ways. If given the opportunity, I would serve the people of Hoboken with a clear conscience, an open mind and a warm heart. Thank you for the opportunity to freely share this message.
Terry LaBruno
