Dear Editor:
I cannot believe it, but here we go again with another scheme by Mayor Schundler to make inroads into the passive and peaceful nature of our Liberty State Park by trying to sell us the idea of a water park that would result in more traffic congestion with increasingly more air pollution.
This plan would greatly decrease the quality of life in Jersey City and nullify the reason why the park was created. The goal was to create a free public recreational shelter for the people to relax in a passive green refuge and escape the hustle and bustle and the noises of a congested city, where one could read a book, enjoy the nature trails, picnic grounds, free concerts or just enjoy watching the birds.
But again, private investors hope to make a buck by trying to change the nature of our park by installing a noisy swimming pool water park and charging a hefty admission fee to boot!
Apparently, Mayor Schundler has been persuaded that Jersey City families would welcome such an installation in our park. Enough already!!! In the past we have said no to the golf course idea, a doll museum, etc., on Liberty State Park land and we will continue to say no to any scheme that would remove a blade of grass from our idyllic “Green Acre” oasis.
We must urge Governor Whitman and our New Jersey Legislature to reject this scheme for developers to profit financially from a park that belongs to the people. We have a moral obligation to preserve Liberty State Park in pristine condition for future generations to enjoy.
