Include “Quit Smoking” in New Year’s resolution

Dear Editor:

When it is time to make those New Year’s resolutions, if “Quit Smoking” is one of them, I commend you. Most people can’t do it alone, so get all the help and encouragement you can. Here are two new ways to get support.

New Jersey has employed two cutting edge treatment initiatives that utilize the Internet and 800 help lines. The first program is New Jersey Quitnet at and is an innovative online resource that provides comprehensive, individually tailored smoking cessation plans. The second program is called New Jersey Quitline, which is a hotline offering personal counseling to New Jersey residents who want to quit smoking. Counselors are available at 1-866-NJ-STOPS six days a week. The services are open to all age groups.

Since smoking is the single most preventable cause of death and disease, I sincerely hope smokers will succeed in their efforts to quit and assure themselves of a healthier life well beyond the new year!
