POLICE BEAT

Neighbors tell police not to leave

A 32-year-old Hoboken resident was charged with assaulting the mother of his child on Nov. 12 at approximately 3 a.m., according to police reports. The assault allegedly took place after police arrived at the women’s west-side apartment to find a babysitter, a child and the father engaged in a dispute.

At the time, the mother had yet to arrive. According to police reports, the father told the officers that he should be allowed to take the child with him out of the apartment, while the babysitter argued that the mother would be home any minute.

In the midst of the argument the mother returned. In the officer’s presence she said that she was upset that the father had not “taken her out” that evening as he had promised. She then told the officers that everything was O.K. and that they could leave. As soon as they exited the apartment, the police report states that concerned neighbors began to tell them that they were making a mistake and that the woman was going to get beaten up. A moment later the elevator opened and the 31-year-old mother stepped out crying.

“She did have a small amount of blood around her nose,” the report said.

The woman accused the father of hitting her, and the officers returned to the apartment only to find that the man had left. They soon caught up with him on Second Street and Willow Avenue, where they arrested him. He was booked later on Simple Assault charges.

Man needs help

Juan Rodriguez, a 28-year-old resident, was arrested on Nov. 10 at 8:07 p.m. inside his parents’ Washington Street apartment.

According to a police report, officers responded to reports of a disturbance and found a woman standing outside of her apartment. The woman said nothing more than “inside, my son, on drugs,” the report says.

According to a police report, when the officers entered the apartment they saw a nude man “sweating heavily and breathing rapidly” while he was “pushing and pulling on another [older] male.”

According to the reports, the man who was being pushed and pulled told officers, “I am his stepfather. He comes home like this every night on drugs.”

Officers noted in the report that the stepfather had scratch marks on his neck and chest and that his T-shirt had been recently torn.

Despite the abuse, the stepfather told the police that he would not sign a complaint against the boy. Even without the stepfather’s cooperation, the officers decided to take the 28-year-old man down to the station, but when they asked him to put on some clothes, he allegedly refused. When they attempted to cuff him, he allegedly threw his arms out and dropped to the floor.

Finally, they cuffed him, and with the help of his mother they were able to get his shorts on, the report indicates. But when they began to bring him downstairs from the fourth floor apartment, he allegedly caused another disturbance, allegedly kicking the officers that were escorting him.

The man was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of simple assault and one count of being under the influence of a controlled substance. He was taken to St. Mary hospital for treatment.

The not very stealthy smoker

A 25-year-old resident of Howell, N.J. was arrested for shoplifting three packs of cigarettes from a Newark Street liquor store on Nov. 10 at approximately 7 p.m., according to police reports. Nicholas Carson, the man who was arrested, was allegedly seen stealing the packs before he left the store, according to a report. Police caught up to him at 200 Grand St.
