We should decide who takes care of our animals, not the state!

Dear Editor:

The animal-owning public needs to be made aware of a bill going through our State Assembly on October 30, Assembly Bill A635.

This bill would regulate the practice of veterinary medicine. It requires the animal owner to obtain veterinary approval prior to hiring the services of special care providers. This specifically effects us horse owners, who regularly use separate equine dentists, chiropractors and massage therapists, etc. This bill removes our right to choose decent care for our animals. It creates a regulatory system worse than our personal health care system.

When I go to the dentist, or the chiropractor, I go to the practitioner whom I believe will give me the best possible care. Why are they trying to take away our rights to do the same for our animals? Through a referral system, the veterinarian then becomes liable for anything that may occur with the special care provider. This may even create a monopoly, as veterinarians will align themselves with one dentist, one chiropractor, etc., and not provide referrals to anyone else. Even worse, the veterinarian may just refuse to provide referrals, because he/she does not believe in alternative therapies such as massage.

What gives the state the right to tell us that we, as responsible animal owners, are incapable of deciding whom we want to take care of our animals? Those opposed to this bill need to contact their local Assembly person ASAP by telephone or preferably by letter.
