Dear Editor:
Please come join your neighbors and visitors on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Van Vorst Park’s gazebo for a brief ceremony celebrating the history and recent renovation of Historic Van Vorst Park. Whether you attend only this event or you attend it as part of the larger Jersey City Homecoming/Art Studio Tour, you’ll enjoy free coffee, handouts and a brief presentation about the history of Van Vorst Park and the role it has played in the development of the Van Vorst community. There will also be brief presentations by Mayor Schundler, Director Kevin Sluka, Councilman Mariano Vega, Jr. and Dr. Cliff Waldman regarding one of the most creative and inclusive community-based park renovations in the history of Jersey City.
We will raise the 1835 U.S. flag on our new historic flag pole to celebrate the year that Cornelius Van Vorst deeded this land to the city as precious park space. We will also present a certificate of appreciation to Home Depot for donating hundreds of free plants to our park’s community gardens.
Homecoming/Art Studio Tour schedules will be available for those wishing to attend other parts of the Homecoming event at the conclusion of our ceremony and brief presentations. Please come promptly at 11 a.m. as all parts of this event are limited to only 50 minutes.
