Thanks for enforcing our dog laws

Dear Editor: Recently, I attended a Hoboken City Council meeting at which I spoke in praise of the administration’s efforts to enforce our laws concerning dogs. As a mother of two young boys and a member of a mother’s group that now numbers well over 100 (many of whom have dogs), I wanted to express our sincere thanks protecting our children from the many hazards that dogs may present to our community. According to city law, dogs must be kept on a leash at all times in public, unless they are in a dog run. Dogs are not allowed in city parks unless they are going to or from a dog run. And since there are no dog runs in Sinatra Park or Pier A Park, dogs are not allowed in those parks. As a dog lover, I wholeheartedly believe that dogs have a place in our community. I remember when growing up that dogs were not even allowed in any of our parks and now city officials have created three dog runs in city parks. I’d say we are providing adequate space indeed. Grassy areas in our parks are off-limits to dogs by City Ordinance. Our children play in the grass and they should not have to play in dog urine and feces. The children of our community should take precedence over dogs, and without question, dogs on the grass present an immediate health threat. I sincerely hope that the dog owners who are breaking the law change their ways because they are really making all dog owners look bad in the eyes of the public. As I stated at the council meeting, I would be interested in meeting with city officials and responsible dog owners to discuss our concerns regarding this issue. Once again, thanks to our city officials, our mayor and city council people, for protecting our children. Irene Sobolov
