Florio thanks Hoboken and the Elks

Dear Editor: On behalf of former Governor Jim Florio who is running for United States Senator, his sincere thanks and appreciation to the people that attended the affair at the Hoboken Elks Club in his honor. It is his hope that he answered your questions and concerns and will never forget the people of Hoboken. He must win the Democratic primary on June 6 against an opponent that has $25 million to spend backed by the power of Wall Street, yet the governor still leads in the polls. His opponent refuses to debate him but chooses to spend millions of dollars with prime time commercials. As Mr. Florio stated “I have 30 years of experience that money can’t buy.” The governor has become the people’s choice for senator, as he travels throughout the state speaking in any place and city, at any time. Through his courage and valiant stand against the big boss on Wall Street, he is rekindling the spirit and hope in democracy for working class people. As for me, it was an honor to be a part in bringing him to Hoboken — one of the last, truly great statesmen of our time. It was a great joy to have him speak with us, drink with us and laugh with us. Thanks to the Elks Club, former Mayor Cappiello, who put a smile on the governor’s face, and a spark in his heart, former Councilman Mike Schaeffer, the senior citizens and all who attended. As the governor entered the ballroom at The Elks Club, the theme from “Rocky” began to play and the crowd rose to their feet applauding with respect. I pray we have helped him on a journey that only he knows how to fulfull and what he must do against great odds. As Mahatma Gandi eloquently stated: “Strength in numbers is the delight of the timid. The valiant in spirit glory is in fighting alone.” Those who are valiant in spirit are with God and never alone. With the help of God and the love of the people, the governor will reach his destination on June 6, and in November become our United States Senator. With his journey complete, no matter the outcome, he will become a very great man. Ed Shirak
