Memorial HS grad receives well-deserved honor

Dear Editor: Art Brunje, a graduate of Memorial High School in 1965, and the University of Wisconsin at Superior (UW-Superior) in 1969, was recently inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. As a fellow classmate of both of us at Memorial and even further with Rocky at UW-Superior, we can attest to Art being an outstanding friend, athlete and human being. After college, Art coached a number of sports but obviously excelled as a football coach with the recent honor bestowed upon him the ultimate achievement. Yet, it is worthy to note that this unselfish guy did not hesitate to thank and acknowledge his line coach John Blihovde, his defensive coach Neil Hoven and his wife of 32 years, Char; all of whom played key roles in Art’s success. We believe that speaks to the character of Art Brunje. A quote Art has used also tells us Art is a guy who can laugh easily when he said, “I was fortunate that Westby High School (Wisconsin) was willing to take a risk and hire man from New Jersey to teach English to a group of Norwegians. Note: Wisconsin is noted for its large number of Norwegians. But Art would probably be the last to tell you that twice he has been honored in “Who’s Who Among Secondary Teachers.” Many of the mid 1960’s generation will remember Art’s great touchdown catch that broke the heart and soul of North Bergen. As graduates of Anna L. Klein’s last class to go to Memorial High School we were fortunate to meet, make and keep many friends from West New York. Today it is with the greatest pleasure that we present to Hudson County and the world, Art Brunje, Hall of Fame Coach! Congratulations to Art, his wife Char and son Justin Charles. You should all be proud and know that your friends far away are just as proud. Bob Faro and Rocky Bleier
