Health Fair provided ‘million dollar work-up’

Dear Editor: The St. Mary Hospital Center for Family Health Physicians and Family Practice Residents participated in the physical examination of children that came to the Hoboken Health Fair held on March 23 and 24 at the Rue School, sponsored by the Hopes Head Start Program and the Hoboken Board of Education. The screening services that were provided for these children were phenomenal–they constituted a “million dollar work-up,” checking their adjustment to school and to learning and therefore, to their potential for a full and satisfactory adult life. These services included screening vision, hearing, speech, fine and gross motor development, screening for psycho-social adjustments, general growth and development, cognitive function, a dental, physical and podiatry examination. Booths were present with materials that instructed parents on good health practices and preventive health care aspects. A great lunch was served to all parents and children and volunteer participants. The parents who brought their children to the Fair must have recognized how outstanding this Fair is because so many took advantage of it by bringing in their little ones to be checked. On behalf of all those parents and children and on behalf of the St. Mary Hospital Center for Family Health, we congratulate the Hopes Head Start Executive Director, Or Welch, Maria Gall, L.P.N., Health Services Manager and the Hoboken School District Administration, Patrick Gagliardi, Superintendent of Schools, John Del Monaco, Supervisor of Special Needs and Ann Monaco, Resource Person for Pre-School Special Needs, their Staffs and the volunteer students from the Hoboken High School and Academy of Sacred Heart, in their detailed and meticulous work in preparing and conducting this annual Health Fair for Hoboken’s children.
