Put yourself in shoes of public housing residents

Dear Editor: It is personally disappointing to see an individual such as T. Jones offends so many of our fellow citizens. I would like to bring T. Jones’ attention that such insensitivity needlessly divides our community when there remains much to be done to improve our quality of life. I understand the struggles of working families. I’ve worked throughout my life to lend a hand where I could. This taught me to be sensitive and cognizant of the problems that many of the families in the Hoboken Housing Authority are experiencing today. Not all of Hoboken’s citizens have the good fortune to live a life of luxury. I would encourage all Hobokenites to put themselves in the shoes of the HHA residents before casting such negative remarks. As the city’s former Minority Affairs Director, it has been my personal experience that many of the HHA families are good, decent and hardworking individuals who are struggling to achieve the American dream. Many of these families have been deprived of succeeding because the doors of opportunity have been slammed shut to them. It is evident to me that when an individual, like T. Jones, takes the time to write such critical and unnecessary letters, they are lost and are in need of guidance. I would hope that we would all look within ourselves for compassion and try to help our fellow citizens. I would hope all citizens use their energy toward good deeds. Furthermore, we should take the time and energy to be volunteers in those areas of our community that are in need. I hope that T. Jones would rethink his or her views and understand just how offensive those statements were to not only the HHA residents, but good and decent citizens everywhere. I trust and pray that by the time T. Jones reads all the responses this/her remarks that he/she will find it within themselves to acknowledge this lapse in judgment. One of the greatest signs of any great person is recognizing when they have done wrong and apologizing to those who they have offended. Nellie Moyeno City Council President
