Dear Editor: The community has always honored our brave firefighters, but the recent comments of the leaders of the Firefighter’s Union make no sense at all. Firefighting is a unique science and profession which depends on location, equipment, communication and skilled personnel because devastating fires know no boundaries. North Hudson happens to be so crowded and compact that consolidating its firefighting resources makes perfect sense. Of course, consolidating fire departments leads to some downsizing because it eliminates unnecessary duplication, but this is the only way millions of dollars of public tax money can be saved. The only reason it should ever be abandoned, is if it causes deaths or great property losses due to failure to respond to fires which haven’t happened. The argument that this will now require Hoboken or Secaucus to respond to major fire needs in North Hudson is nonsense since they have always done so in case of public need. North Hudson has also always responded to fire needs in surrounding towns to save precious lives and property, and now they will do so better. The argument that this means the town governments should consolidate, is also nonsense because the people that built the North Hudson communities would no longer have oversight and control over their local governmental officials, but would simply become small neighborhoods with no voice in a large “New York” type city. In short, it would be a disaster. North Hudson is leading the way locally, and in the state and nation in this vital effort in fighting the common enemy, a devastating fire that knows no boundaries. The Mayors and governing bodies of North Bergen, West New York, Guttenberg, Union City and Weehawken are to be commended for their fine effort. John Tomasin, Esq.
