The importance of child passenger safety

Dear Editor: The week of February 13-19 is National Child Passenger Safety Week. It is a time to stop for a moment and make certain that we are doing everything possible to safeguard our youngest and most fragile passengers. Four out of five child safety seats, 80 percent, are not installed correctly in vehicles and will not protect the child as intended, according to national studies. That’s why the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety has been training state, county and municipal police officers, hospital personnel and other public safety advocates in how to inspect child safety seats for proper installation. In 1999, the NJDHTS trained more than 60 people as child passenger safety technicians. These technicians are now conducting child seat inspections in their local communities. These child seat inspections are voluntary, free of charge and open to the general public. The child passenger safety technicians will examine a car seat, point out any errors in installation and discuss proper installation procedures with the parent. A list of scheduled child seat inspections can be viewed at the NJDHTS website, www.state.nj.us/lps/hts/checkups.htm. Residents may also call the NJDHTS at 1-800-422-3750. No summonses, citations or fines are issued at these child seat inspections. Our sole purpose is to help parents protect their children and to save lives. Colonel Peter O’Hagan, Director State Division of Highway Traffic Safety
