Our heartfelt appreciation and thanks to all

Dear Editor: On Friday, December 31, 1999, our brother Fr. Hugh Fitzgerald, former pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church, Jersey City, passed away. During the following week, many people expressed their sympathy by assisting with all the tasks at hand. We, the family, would like to take this opportunity to thank the following: The Most Reverend Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Newark, for presiding at the funeral Mass; Reverend Monsignor Richard Groncki, Rector, Basilica of Sacred Heart, Newark, for concelebrating the funeral Mass; Most Reverend Dominic Marconi, Bishop (and classmate of Fr. Fitzgerald) for presiding at the Vigil Mass; Reverend Monsignor Joseph Flusk (classmate of Fr. Fitzgerald), homilist, Vigil Mass; Reverend Father Peter Jaramillo, Augustinian, homilist, funeral Mass. All the clergy, religious and laity, especially Sister Jean Young, SC, and Jaime Ortiz, Deacon, who participated in the Vigil Mass and funeral Mass; Father Gregory Studerus and the staff of the Parish of the Resurrection for their support and words of comfort; the music ministry of St. Michael Church, especially Roxanne Clark, for making the celebrations of the two Masses reflective of Fr. Fitzgerald’s life and love of music. McLaughlin’s Funeral Home staff, including Vincent Grasso, for his caring presence; the Jersey City police officers and New Jersey State Troopers who handled traffic and acted as pall bearers; the St. Michael’s Seniors who prepared the church prior to the services. The Filipino and Spanish communities of St. Michael’s for hosting the receptions in the rectory and cafeteria for the many friends who paid their respects on Tuesday and Wednesday; Coles Street Cafe co-owner Mike Ryan and staff for donating food for the family and friends, and all those who attended the services, offered their prayers and shared their special memories with us.
