New Jersey City University (2039 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, 200-3246) is hosting an opening reception for “Sign Language,” a painting exhibit featuring the works of Weehawken resident Ben Goldman and Lennon Jno Baptiste from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lemmerman Gallery in Hepburn Hall, Room 323. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Along with the Rotunda exhibition, Jersey City will host the 7th Annual Women of Action Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 280 Grove St. The ceremony will honor 27 of Jersey City’s most influential women, all of whom have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the quality of life in Jersey City. In addition, the Jersey City Public Library is saluting young and old film actresses by showcasing a free movie every Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Mildred H. Yo La Tengo will be on the airwaves for WFMU’s annual Marathon Fundraiser on Saturday, March 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Gaylord Fields’s radio program. The Lyric Theater Orchestra will present an Opera Gala on Saturday, March 18 at 8 p.m. at the Grace and Kenneth Debaun Auditorium located in the Edwin A. Stevens Building (Fifth and Hudson streets) on the Steven’s Institute of Technology campus in Hoboken. The Orchestra will feature arias, duets, and overtures by Mozart, Bizet, Rossini, Saint Saens, Tchaikovsky and Verdi. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors.
